Great news for all Filipinos and Asians alike in Winnipeg! A new source of Filipino food and Asian items will be moving into the Garden City Shopping Centre. Remember the old Sears space? That’s the spot!
Seafood City, the popular Filipino supermarket chain in America, has branches in California, Nevada, Washington, Hawaii, Illinois, and the most recent one opened in Mississauga last September.
It has been announced that a Winnipeg branch will be opening soon. It will take up around half of the 92,000 square-foot vacant space in the Garden City Shopping Centre. According to a spokesperson from the mall, “The former Sears location will be reformatted to accommodate a second large format tenant in addition to Seafood City, and the remaining space will become home to smaller stores.”
“A new entrance fronting onto McPhillips Street will also be created as part of the renovation,” the spokesperson added.
News have spread out among the huge Filipino community of Winnipeg and a lot has expressed their excitement. The area where the grocery chain is set to open is close to a known Filipino area in the city which is simply a perfect positioning strategy.
The Seafood City store will be opening next summer. With Max’s Restaurant opening soon, this is definitely something a lot of Filipino Winnipeggers will be looking forward to for next year!
