8 Things to Know Before Moving to Canada

Whatever the reason is for buying a one-way ticket to Canada, there are some important things to know just to be prepared. Canada is a great country and there’s a lot of preparation you can do in advance to help you adjust easier and ensure you don’t get homesick.

1. Language
   Canada has two official languages: English and French. English is enough to get by around the country. It wouldn’t hurt to learn a bit of French especially if your destination is Quebec. Since it’s most likely that you’ll see kababayans anywhere, you can just talk to them in tagalog!
2. Weather
   You will experience all 4 seasons in Canada and winters can be harsh and scary. Prepare for the snow and dress warm especially for us Pinoys who come from a tropical country. Don’t worry, summers are pleasant and the climate is tolerable as long as you are dressed accordingly.
3. Living expenses
   Expect that the housing, transportation and food expenses will be more expensive because salaries are also higher in Canada than in most countries. It’s recommended to make sure that you will have enough money for your living expenses.
4. Healthcare
   Canada has some of the best healthcare in the world. And all of this is for free is you’re a permanent resident. Healthcare is delivered to you through a publicly funded system, which means it’s available for anyone. 5. Jobs
   There are a lot of jobs available in around especially if you’re not picky. As for the regulated jobs, you will need to go through a process to get your Canadian license. The process will take a while so you have to be ready to take on survival jobs.
6. Driving license
   A Philippine driver’s license is valid in Canada for the first 3 months upon your arrival. After that period, you will need to take the exams in order to convert your driving license to a full Canadian driver’s license.
7. Smoking
   Smoking is illegal in all public places. Smokers should know that the only places where you will be allowed to smoke are in your own living space and in the great outdoors.
8. People
   Canadians are friendly people. They smile a lot and love small talks, even at/with strangers. Not smiling back or avoiding a conversation is seen as rude. Just like at home, don’t hesitate, ngiti lang!
