Double double or Triple triple?
A couple of Philippine cities are now ordering coffee this way now as the iconic Canadian brewhouse, Tim Hortons, lands on Asian shores, bringing warmth from the Great White North.
Canada’s favourite coffee store first opened at the Uptown Mall in BGC, Taguig in 2017, with a selection of its premium coffee, freshly baked goods, delicious sandwiches & wraps, and other food products.
Filipinos, being the big foodies that we are, helped “Tims” grow, and is now proud to have 20 branches across Metro Manila, including one in Laguna, signaling an expansion outside of the National Capital Region.
Franchise prices of goods differ in every location around the world, and Tim Hortons is no different. Here’s a look at the price difference between Manila and Canada.
For reference: $1 = $38 as of today
Price in Manila | Price in Canada | |
Original Coffee (S) | Php70.00 ($1.84) | $1.59 |
Original Coffee (M) | Php80.00 ($2.10) | $1.79 |
Original Coffee (L) | Php90.00 ($ 2.37) | $2.99 |
Iced Capp (S) | Php115.00 ($3..03) | $2.49 |
Iced Capp (M) | Php130.00 ($3.42) | $2.99 |
Iced Capp (L) | Php145.00 ($3.82) | $3.49 |
Tim Bits (1 pc) | Php10.00 ($0.26) | $.50 |
Tim Bits (10 pcs) | Php80.00 ($2.10) | $1.99 |
Tim Bits (20 pcs) | Php160.00 ($4.21) | $3.99 |
Tim Bits (80 pcs) | Php350.00 ($9.21) | $7.99 |
Based on the prices, it is clearly more expensive in Manila, competing to that of Starbucks’ prices. It is a different story in Canada as Tims is priced much lower than that of Starbucks. This is probably one of the main reasons why Canadians love Tim Hortons!
Aside from the product offerings, it is good to see how Tim Hortons is as an employer in the Philippines. In Canada, their employees receive at least the minimum gross wage of $11-15/hour (varies per province) or $88-120/day (Phd3,500-5,000).
If they followed the minimum gross wage, employees in the Philippines could receive upt to Php537/day. Given the lower cost of manpower in the Philippines, it is safe to assume that Tim Hortons will be hiring more employees to run a store in Manila than in Canada. Similar to how some developed countries outsource in locations that have a lower cost of living and much lower minimum wages.
Do you think Pinoys will be as welcoming and loving to Tim Hortons as they are to Starbucks? Definitely! One thing is for sure: a lot of Pinoys will have a new tambayan because Timmy’s will be open 24 hours!
